Safety and handling | It is recommended to use protection for the skin and eyes. |
Storage stability | Three batches of the product were stored for 6, 12 or 18 months at either 22°C or 37°C. More than 87 % of the active substances were detected at the low temperature whereas more than 83% was detected at the higher temperature.
The product was added to a vitamin/mineral premix and stored for 6 months at 22°C in sealed containers. The content of active substances was measured after 3 and 6 months, respectively. After 3 months of storage, the concentration of thymol, carvacrol and methyl salicylate remained unchanged whereas the concentration of D-carvone and L-menthol was reduced by 20 %. After 6 months of storage, the residual activity of carvacrol and methyl salicylate was above 80 %, however, the concentration of the remaining substances was reduced to approximately 60 of the initial values. A single batch of the product was added to mash feed for chickens and stored in a sealed container at 22°C for 5 months. After 5 months of storage, the rate of recovery was at least 85 % of the initial values. |
Heat stability | Mash feed supplemented with the additive was pelleted at either 85°C or 95°C. Samples of the mash feed and the pelleted feed were analysed for the active substances. Immediately after pelleting the rate of recovery was above 90 % at 85 °C and above 80 % at 95°C. The subsequent 3 months storage reduced the recovery of the compounds by a further 10 %. |
Physical state of product and appearance | The product has an off-white colour with flowing properties. Bulk density is 0.53 kg/litre. Dusting potential is measured to a value of 0.03 g/m3. |
Distribution in feed | Homogeneity of the product when added to mash feed for chickens, was measured. Coefficient of variance was c. 10 % for all compounds except methyl salicylate which was 23.7 %. |
