Product storage stability
Samples from three batches were stored for various periods of time and at different temperatures: 5°C, 25°C, 30°C and 40°C for 15, 24, 24 or 18 months, respectively. After 15 months at 5°C, 87 % of the initial enzymatic activity could be recovered. Enzymatic losses increased with increased temperatures: After 24 months at either 25°C or 30°C, 65 % and 53 % of the initial activity could be recovered. The residual activity when stored at 40°C was 25 %.
Storage stability in premix and feed
Three batches of the additive were supplemented to premixes for either pigs or laying hens. Samples were collected and stored in closed plastic bags for six months at either 25°C or 30°C. Additional samples were also stored for two months at 40°C.
At 25°C, 76 % of the initial activity was recovered in the pig premix, whereas only 34 % was recovered in the layer premix. The loss of activity increased further when the temperature rose to 30°C. Of the initial activity, 53 % and 24 % were left in the premixes for pigs or layers, respectively. At the highest temperature, 40°C, no activity was lost in the pig premix, whereas 37.5 % was left in the layer premix.
Both mash and pelleted feed samples were stored for three months at 25°C or 30°C. No activity loss could be detected in the mash feed, whereas 94% of the initial activity was recovered in the pelleted feed. The samples stored at 30°C showed a loss of enzymatic activity of 12 % in the mash feed and 5 % in the pelleted feed. Additional samples were stored at 40°C for two months. After two months, the loss of activity was 17%.
Heat stability
Mash feed for either pigs or laying hens was supplemented with the additive and pelleted at either 70-75°C or 80-85°C. At either temperature, the rate of recovery was approx. 90 %.
Physical properties
A laser diffraction study showed that the mean particle size ranged from 239.8 µm to 260.7 µm. The fraction of particles <100µm was 13-18 %; <50 µm 5-9 % and <10µm 0.9 - 1.7%. Dusting potential was measured in three batches of the product and ranged from 0.03 to 0.04 g/m3
Homogeneity
The capacity to be distributed homogeneously in feed was tested in ten subsamples of premix and feed. In the premises, the CV ranged from 15.8 % to 17 %. In the mash feed, the results showed a CV of 12 % and in the pelleted feed, 7 %.
Carrier
Linseed meal: 58 %; calcium carbonate: 38 %; mineral oil: 1 %; fermentation product: 3 %
Handling
The European Commission states: "For users of the additive and premixtures, feed business operators shall establish operational procedures and organisational measures to address potential risks to their use. Where those risks cannot be eliminated or reduced to a minimum by such procedures and measures, the additive and premixtures shall be used with personal protective equipment including skin and breathing protections."
